NCsoft on Wednesday announced that its Macintosh conversion of the massively multiplayer online game City of Heroes is now available as an open beta. Mac users interested in giving the game a try are welcome to sign up to test it.
City of Heroes is an MMOG set in the fictional land of Paragon City, a comic book metropolis populated by costumed superheroes and supervillains. You decide whether you’ll fight for the forces of justice or evil as you create an entirely customized character with a unique look and unique abilities. You battle criminals, villains and monsters. You can form your own band of players, explore the city, and be part of the story as you participate in more than thirty different ongoing story arcs.
The Mac conversion of City of Heroes was created by TransGaming, the company behind the Cider translation layer technology used to bring other games such as Spore to the Macintosh. As a result, an Intel-based Mac is required to play City of Heroes.
“… we also want to make sure we have worked out as many of the kinks and bugs in the Mac client as possible, and unfortunately that has caused us to push the full release of the Mac version of City of Heroes to January, 2009,” said Matt “Positron” Miller, the game’s lead designer. “We are very confident that by that time we will be able to offer you the best in super-powered massively multiplayer gaming for the Mac.”

Installing on 64-bit versions of Windows[edit]
- The original disc release uses a 16-bit installer.
- Insert the CD
- Download Winevdm.
- Extract it Somewhere
- Click on otvdmw.exe then look for SETUP.EXE
- You may get a 'SEGV' error and if that's the case just click on continue
- Follow the Prompts
Playing the game on Windows 8 and 10[edit]
- Download ddraw.
- Extract it somewhere
- Copy ddraw.dll to your installation folder (where you installed the game at)
- Right click on HEROES2W.exe and go to properties
- On Compatibility Mode Select Windows 98 / Windows ME
- Click on Reduced colour mode and set it to '16-Bit (65536) Colour'
- Also Click on 'Run this Program as an Administrator
- Click Apply and OK
- Run the game
