Already in the late nineteenth century and especially by the beginning of the twentieth, conscious political life, especially in Europe, was increasingly beginning to gravitate toward, and be galvanized by, grand transcendental fictions—what I call metamyth—capable of activating wide support among the increasingly literate and thus politically mobilizable masses.
Permitting escape from unsatisfactory reality through a commitment to an imaginary reality yet to be achieved, metamyth served to galvanize and channel mass passions—with the spread of literacy facilitating the political appeal of the metamyths and with industrial techniques, harnessed in the name of the metamyth, making feasible the infliction of death on a scale without precedent in human history.
A politically activated world, driven by rising social frustrations, even if not soon likely to be infected by a new metamyth, could quite easily become vulnerable to massive instability and violence in the absence of tangible progress, both on the level of political conduct and applied political values, toward an increasingly cooperative and just global system.
The ultimate danger is that this points toward a new mobilizing metamyth.
The implementation of the metamyth through the coercive creation of a secular utopia was to be the fulfillment of history.
But the inchoate state of the prevailing political outlooks in the ex-communist states, and especially the lack of integration between such potentially conflicting impulses as the religious, nationalist, and secular-materialist could produce a condition in which the small personal beliefs that so effectively opposed the communist metamyth could first degenerate into unrealistic expectations of materialist self-gratification and then turn—out of sheer frustration and anger—into new doctrines of hate.
The appearance of metamyth as a political factor has to be understood in the context of the emergence by the twentieth century of the phenomenon of mass political awareness, that is, large-scale sensitivity to political appeals and an activist political commitment to political goals.
These factors, in turn, proved to be important not only in defining the content of nineteenth-century mass political awakening but eventually during the twentieth century in perverting it into the totalitarian metamyth.
The failure of the most extreme perversion of that mode of political thought—namely, of the totalitarian metamyth—has lately prompted an extreme swing in the pendulum of fashionable postmodern thought: from the intellectuals’ fascination with “scientific” Marxism as the epitome of “objective truth” to their currently antithetical embrace of uninhibited relativism.
